‘Serial killer’ in TN gets life-term jail in two murder cases

Police are yet to file chargesheets for two other murders. Public prosecutor Savarimuthu, who argued for the police, said, Serial killer Sappani being escorted out of court after the verdict in Tiruchy on Monday TIRUCHY: The Tiruchy court on Monday convicted 43-year-old T Sappani in two murder cases and sentenced him to life imprisonment till death. Principal District Judge K Babu pronounced Sappani of Krishnasamuthiram guilty of the murders of M Thangadurai of Vengur and Sathiyanathan. Sappani is accused of committing six other murders, including killing his father, between 2009 and 2016. A verdict on three murders is scheduled for August 9. Police are yet to file chargesheets for two other murders. The Tamil Nadu Police is among the few police forces in the country to receive the coveted ‘President’s Colours’ Vice-President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the prestigious ‘President’s Colours’ for the Tamil Nadu Police to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in a customary ceremony in Rajarathinam Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Mr. Stalin announced that a medal would be awarded to every police personnel in the force to mark the feat. The Tamil Nadu Police is among the few police forces in the country to receive the coveted ‘President’s Colours’. Though the ‘President’s Colours’ for the Tamil Nadu Police was approved as early as August 19, 2009 when late leader M. TN urban polls: BJP polling agent objects to woman voting with hijab on, removed from Madurai booth

  A polling agent of the BJP was removed from a polling booth in Madurai on Saturday after he objected to a woman wearing a hijab while voting. In a video that was shared widely on social media, the man claimed that the woman’s face was not visible while voting. The incident disrupted polling for some time at ward no. 8 in Al Ameen High School, Melur municipality. The booth in-charge of the BJP who raised the objection was identified as Girirajan. Officials in the video are seen informing him that they were able to verify the identity of the woman and that there was no need to question her. However, the man refused to pay heed. “I cannot accept this. How can I cross verify the person wearing hijab with the photos in this (voters) list? I will definitely raise this issue, irregularity is taking place here,” the man was heard shouting in the video.
