Russia-Ukraine war: Palestinian citizens of Israel seek safety after being 'abandoned' by government

Image
Malek Yunis, a university student who has lived in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, for the past five years, had been eagerly anticipating his graduation from medical school in September, and his subsequent return to his hometown of Arara, a Palestinian village in northern Israel. But when Russia invaded Ukraine last week, his only thought was reaching safety. Malek’s situation is not unique, however. Nearly 2,000 Palestinian students with Israeli citizenship are now stranded in Ukraine and forced to make a choice between their education and safety as Ukraine's universities refuse to allow their students to continue their studies abroad via Zoom under threat of repeating the academic year if they left. Yunis and fellow medical students hid in shelters as the first Russian air strikes tore through the city. “Kharkiv has become a ghost town,” he told Middle East Eye over the phone. “In the early hours [of the invasion], we expected that the Russians would only launch a few warning s...

Ukraine deepens defence ties with Turkey amid standoff with Russia

Image
Ukraine and Turkey on Thursday signed a series of agreements — including a deal that will expand the production capabilities of Turkish drone-maker Baykar, which saw its drones deployed last year in Kiev’s war against Russian-backed separatists in its eastern Donbass region. The two countries signed eight agreements, which also included a trade deal that Kiev says will boost bilateral trade to around $10bn over the next five years. “[The] defence industry and aviation are the main driving force for our strategic partnership,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters. “Baykar will expand its production of unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine, and Ukraine will strengthen its defence capabilities with these new technologies and jobs.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has a close — but sometimes fraught — relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reiterated Ankara’s support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine as tensions Moscow continue to escala...

Turkey: How Russia-Ukraine war could set back recent economic gains

Image
“Oh, no,” a Turkish travel agent bemoaned, as yet another pre-sold tour package cancellation appeared on his screen while he was speaking to Middle East Eye on Friday. “I hope this war doesn’t last long. Otherwise, we don’t know how to survive,” said Levent Nizamoglu, the executive at an Istanbul-based tourism agency that organises tour packages for Russian tourists in Istanbul and its adjacent regions. “We don’t know what to do. We don’t know what to tell the hotels. We don’t know who will compensate us for these losses, and how,” he said. Nizamoglu is one of many in Turkey’s tourism sector who are feeling anxious after the Russian invasion of Ukraine . There are many causes for concern: the closure of airspace in Ukraine, the fear that Turkey will not maintain its neutral stance in this conflict, as well as the memories of 2015, when Turkey downed a Russian jet for allegedly violating Turkish airspace, triggering a political and economic crisis with Russia. “This war will be ...

Facebook bans Russia state media from running adverts, monetising

Image
Facebook says it has restricted Russian state media’s ability to earn money on the social media platform as Moscow’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine reached the streets of Kyiv. “We are now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetising on our platform anywhere in the world,” Nathaniel Gleicher, the social media giant’s security policy head, said on Twitter on Friday. He added that Facebook would “continue to apply labels to additional Russian state media”. Facebook’s parent company Meta said earlier on Friday that Russia would hit its services with restrictions after it refused authorities’ order to stop using fact checkers and content warning labels on its platforms. Russian invasion of Ukraine enters third day: What we know so far

Image
Invading Russian forces have closed in on Ukraine’s capital in an apparent encircling movement after a barrage of air attacks on cities and military bases around the country. Frequent artillery blasts could be heard in Kyiv in the early hours of Saturday, coming from an unspecified location some distance from the city centre, according to the Reuters news agency. The invasion of Ukraine began early on Thursday with missile attacks on cities and military bases, followed by a multipronged ground assault that rolled troops in from separatist-held areas in the east; from the southern region of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014; and from Belarus to the north. The assault, anticipated for weeks by the West, amounts to Europe’s most significant ground conflict since World War II. It is unclear how much or little Russian forces have seized or the extent of the casualties. ‘Nazi-style course of action’: Ukraine blasts Russia at UNSC meet

Image
Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations has railed against Russia at a meeting of the UN Security Council, calling the Russian invasion “a Nazi-style course of action”. Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya on Friday also accused Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya of violating Security Council rules by continuing as president of the council during votes and actions that concerned his country. “Do you remember how many times he said that and his deputies said in this very room, that would mean no invasion, no attacks?” he said, referring to Nebenzya. “Your words have less value than a hole in the New York pretzel.” Read More : https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/26/nazi-style-course-of-action-ukraine-blasts-russia-at-unsc-meet

‘We won’t put down weapons’: Zelenskyy vows to fight on in Kyiv

Image
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appeared in a video filmed outside his office in Kyiv, pledging to fight as Russia’s invading forces stormed towards the capital. “I am here. We will not lay down any weapons. We will defend our state, because our weapons are our truth,” he declared in the clip that was posted on Saturday morning, urging residents not to believe in “fakes” about the surrender of the Ukrainian army. “A lot of fake information has appeared on the internet saying that I allegedly called on our army to lay down its arms and that evacuation is under way,” he said. Russia-Ukraine war: How Syrians in Idlib feel about crisis

Image
Civilians in war-torn Syria have been watching the Russian invasion of Ukraine with mixed feelings. For many, the war recalls their own plight. Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad since 2011, when a revolution against Assad turned into a protracted civil war that has displaced some 13 million people and killed nearly half a million, according to the United Nations. As soon as the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on Thursday, Aziz al-Asmar, a Syrian graffiti artist, was preparing to paint a mural expressing solidarity with Ukraine. “My colleagues and I have painted murals on the walls of our houses destroyed by Putin-backed Assad, to show our support for the Ukrainian people,” Asmar told Middle East Eye. “Russia does not care about shedding the blood of thousands of innocent people, for its own interests,” Asmar said, from in front of a mural he painted on the wall of a house bombed during the war east of Idlib province. “We have s...
